Inspiration for all my songs really all start with the premise that everyone knows what it is like to be down, what it is like to have loved and lost and what it is like to have suffered all the bad things that get thrown at us. However, as the songs progress they provide a positive message and I like to think they are all uplifting.
Emotional imagery and feeling is powerful and is something most people have in common… we all understand it and I guess that’s how my songs have been connecting with people.

Around
This is a haunting song. There is no direct mention but this was written truly after we entered the conflict in Afghanistan. Having seen dead British soldiers endlessly and needlessly paraded through the streets of Wootton Bassett I felt impelled to write a song about loss and the anguish a parent must feel about losing their child I was trying to put myself in the position of a parent whose son had been killed. So I guess it's about an emotional connection we all know about and have felt at some time in our life - the experience of the death of a loved one. Don’t You Loose Your Hold
This is a song based on reflection. Looking back it’s a song I would have sung to my “younger self” – i.e. when I was a teen. It’s really saying trust what you feel is right rather than what you’re being told but at the same time take the time to listen to advice. Poltergeist In High Heels
Pass – I wrote this in 20 minutes it was just a stream of consciousness and I don’t understand it either but it’s a good tune. People enter and leaving you life and when they go they might as well be ghosts which triggered of the sound and haunting feel to the song. It was written at a time when a lot of people where coming in and out of my life at a rapid pace all wanting their “pound of flesh” before they went. It has a haunting experience hence the poltergeist link. Feel My Love
This song is just a pure uplifting melodic love ballad…..something we can all relate to. |
East Coast Train
This is a song about lost love – the one that got away. It's a narrative song about going back to try and put things right and rekindle a relationship. I used a train as the method of transportation. Plus, a coincidence as the first person I ever cared for works for East Coast Trains and we got back in touch after over 20 years via Facebook………….so there you go…... This World
This is a motivational song – if you're fed up and feel life is going nowhere, this is about getting up of your backside and doing something about it instead of moaning. Change won't come to you……… you've got to go and find it. Stronger Than Me
Difficult to talk about this song – it is all about the death of a younger brother. This song is for all the families who have experienced the death of someone who died way too early……(not just a child). It’s about the loss of a loved one – an emotion most people can connect with. I dedicate this to my Dad, Christine, John and all those who support the Children's Heart Unit Fund at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, UK. Fate
This is a narrative song, again inspired by human emotion but this is about the resilience of people – how they cope with all the bad things and have the positivity to see that life goes on and they have to carry out their responsibilities – i.e. in this case raising a child on your own. The Other Side
Similar to Fate except it questions why would you throw your life away when you have everything going for you. Based on a friend of mine who’s took on the responsibility of raising his brothers child when he had passed away – (well – went of the rails and self exploded to be truthful). |
In You I Trust
This is a simple song about friendship. That’s all…. The Big Lamp
This is a song about trying to escape what you are but at the end of day you can’t. It’s set in an area of my hometown, Newcastle, UK, but it’s really about your roots i.e. – “you can take the boy out of the city but you can’t take the city out of the boy”. I made it a narrative song about a “killer” who wants out but can’t do anything about it …It must have subconsciously been based on a lot of crime TV programmes I’ve recently found myself watching…LOL I don’t watch much TV but some things grab my attention………I guess it’s just the interesting life stories people have. Alive To It
This is a song about being cheated on, beaten on, let down and betrayed – all the worst things but I thought it would be an interesting twist to give it all an upbeat sound. i.e. you can rise above it all with a dance beat…LOL. The Last Fight
Originally called the last fight of Tom Sayers. He was a bare knuckle boxer / pugilist back in 1800’s but also has a link to my family as he is something like my 3rd great grandfather. The song is about my emotion link to that rather than a song about boxing. He’s buried in Highgate Cemetery, London. A few years back I went down to see the grave, which is a bit of a monument. By the grave is his faithful dog Lion carved in stone but the whole trip was spoilt as they wanted to charge me £5 to go and see it……not that I’m tight fisted or anything……..never mind. (p/s you can see Karl Marx’s for free….bah…)..rant over! Eyes On The Prize
“And after your fall, you can surely rise…just keep your eyes on the prizes”………what more positive message do you need. |
